Peoples National Bank of Springfield was the first religious and ethnically-integrated bank in downstate Illinois. African Americans Dr. Edwin A. Lee, Sr. and E. Winfred "Doc" Helm were instrumental in founding it. Located on the east side of Springfield across from the Cook Street post office, its motto was "where people make the difference." See black and white photos from the 1970s, architectural plans, newspaper articles, telephone directory advertisements, oral histories, artifact photos, certificates, and correspondence.
All candidates running for the IL-15 Congressional District seat have been invited to a Forum to discuss important issues and answer questions posed by a moderator. Audience members will be invited to submit questions as well. This event is presented by Jacksonville and Capital City Illinois Indivisible and co-sponsored by multiple regional Indivisible groups.
A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
