Peoples National Bank of Springfield was the first religious and ethnically-integrated bank in downstate Illinois. African Americans Dr. Edwin A. Lee, Sr. and E. Winfred "Doc" Helm were instrumental in founding it. Located on the east side of Springfield across from the Cook Street post office, its motto was "where people make the difference." See black and white photos from the 1970s, architectural plans, newspaper articles, telephone directory advertisements, oral histories, artifact photos, certificates, and correspondence.

Join us for an in-depth look at the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport’s Smart Airport and Regional Logistics Plan, a newly completed initiative that explores how SPI will accommodate the next generation of aviation technologies. This forward-looking plan evaluates the expected energy demands associated with emerging air mobility systems, the infrastructure required to support them, and the capabilities and constraints of the local electric grid that powers the airport. This timely program follows the completion of SPI’s award-winning solar energy development, with the second phase scheduled to be energized within weeks. Attendees will learn how the Springfield Airport Authority is proactively preparing for both current and future energy needs—supporting existing tenants, enabling new development opportunities and strengthening long-term resilience. Presenters include Susan Zellers of Hanson Professional Services Inc. and Mark Hanna of the Springfield Airport Authority, who will provide an overview of the planning effort and its potential economic benefits for Springfield and Sangamon County. They will be joined by Clayton Stambaugh, Deputy Director for Aeronautics at IDOT and Chair of the National Association of State Aviation Officials, who will discuss why future-focused planning is essential at both the state and national levels.
Step into the spirit of the holidays with decor arranged by the Springfield Civic Garden Club. Enjoy the sparkle of art glass throughout the house. Tours run every 15 minutes; final departure at 6:30 PM. Post-tour cocoa and s'mores in the courtyard, with live music by Ben Bedford from 5:00 PM-6:30 PM. (No live music December 26.)
