Rochester High School is bringing big energy, big heart, and a timeless story to the stage with its spring musical production of Disney’s Newsies. Director Matt Vala and cast member Holden Nichols share what makes this show—and this production—so special.
Based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, Newsies follows a group of young paper sellers who band together to stand up against unfair labor practices. With music by legendary Disney composer Alan Menken and a book by Harvey Fierstein, the show blends high-energy dance numbers with a powerful message about unity, courage, and finding your voice. Holden Nichols stars as Jack Kelly, the charismatic and conflicted leader of the Newsies, a role he says is especially meaningful because the story centers on kids advocating for themselves.
For Vala, who returns to Springfield since beginning teaching musical theater at Illinois State University and previously founding the Hoogland Education Program, Newsies is a natural fit. He wants an ensemble-driven show that emphasizes collaboration, confidence, and connection—both on and off the stage. That spirit is reflected in the close-knit cast, diverse representation of the Newsies, and support from a creative team made up of familiar faces from the local theater community.
Performances run Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28 at 7 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on March 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for students and seniors—and available through the Rochester High School website. With a live orchestra, choreography, and a story that resonates across generations, Newsies takes you back in time while being relevant today.
