The University of Illinois Springfield Performing Arts Center Director Bryan Rives and Development Director Sarah Brewer talk with NPR Illinois' Sean Crawford about what's ahead for the Sangamon Auditorium.

After months of quiet, there’s finally good news for arts lovers in central Illinois: the UIS Performing Arts Center, which includes Sangamon Auditorium, is on track to reopen this fall, bringing Broadway tours and live performances back to Springfield.

Rives and Brewer explain why the venue has been closed and what audiences can expect next. The shutdown wasn’t due to a minor repair, but a massive infrastructure project requiring the removal and replacement of all water and wastewater pipes throughout the building. With walls opened and systems rebuilt, hosting performances simply wasn’t possible during construction.

The plumbing work is expected to wrap up this summer, followed by several weeks of resetting operations. The target reopening date is Oct. 1, just in time for a full fall season. Broadway touring productions are already in the works, with official announcements expected later this summer.

The closure also created an opportunity for long-overdue renovations. Thanks to a donor-funded campaign, the auditorium is receiving brand-new seating and carpeting for the first time in decades. The facility opened in 1981.

The upgrades focus on comfort and accessibility, including wider seats with better support, added aisles on the main floor, more ADA seating, and features designed to better accommodate patrons with mobility needs. Seating capacity will decrease slightly, but the overall experience will be significantly improved.

Despite the pause, audience enthusiasm hasn’t faded. In fact, attendance had reached record levels prior to the closure, and staff expect momentum to return even stronger when the doors reopen. With modern upgrades, renewed energy, and top-tier performances ahead, Sangamon Auditorium is preparing for a true second act.
