Springfield Park District

Nathan Essex recently joined the Springfield Park District as the Director of Marketing and Recreation. He spoke to Community Voices about his time as a teacher and principal, his love of music, and his initial plans through his new position at the park district. Nathan also discussed some of the great events and activities that will be happening this summer.

The goal of this project is to build a better community by providing on-the-job training, life skills, leadership development, and educational opportunities for at-risk youth within Springfield, between the ages of 15-22.

The Washington Park Botanical Garden plans to replace its conservatory dome, which was constructed in the 1970s. Botanical Garden General Manager Alexa Bryan Potts spoke to Community Voices about the need for the dome and how she hopes it will attract future visitors. She also shared the garden’s need for volunteers and what’s blooming at Washington Park.

A combination of state money and a local gift will cover the cost.

Sonthana Thongsithavong is tennis manager at the Velasco Tennis Center. He spoke to Community Voices about his journey with tennis and the offerings at the Velasco Tennis Center. Sonthana also teaches us about platform tennis and his love of coaching.

Andre Hawkins in the Special Recreation Supervisor at the Springfield Park District. He spoke to Community Voices about the activities and camps the park district provides for those with disabilities. He also shared how the community can participate and help coach athletes.

Derek Harms is the Executive Director of the Springfield Park District.
