Springfield City Treasurer Jim Langfelder has announced he will run for Springfield mayor next year. The son of former mayor Ossie Langfelder says the theme of his campaign is simple:
"You should do what's best for the city. That's what it's all about. That's how I ran the treasurer's office, to do what's in the best interest, protecting city funds, putting in safeguards and changing the way we do business in the treasuer's office. And if you do that, everything else takes care of itself," Langfelder said.
He made the announcement on the steps of his childhood home in Springfield. His father, who was celebrating his 88th birthday on Saturday, was in attendance.
"He's done a lot for the city already," the elder Langfelder said. "I'm very proud. I wish him the best. It's a lot of hard work, but he'll be great."
Current mayor Mike Houston and Sangamon County Auditor Paul Palazzolo are also running, and others are mulling the possibility.
Palazzolo was quick to go on the attack, saying Langfelder was silent as the city's pension debt soared. Langfelder says he tried to organize a summit of city leaders, unions and others to find a solution. He also said decisions regarding the city's budget are made by the mayor and council.
Langfelder talked about fiscal discipline, keeping CWLP viable and having an open and honest administration. He also stressed the importance of keeping a good working relationship with the city council.
Langfelder refused to make a one term pledge if elected mayor. He says that will be up to voters. Houston has been criticized for changing his mind about only serving one term.
After being elected treasurer three times, Langfelder is prevented from running for that office again because of term limits.
