* Rail consolidation: City-county plan to apply again for $16 million after being turned down last fall by the federal government for the next phase of work -- this time Ash and Laurel Street underpasses AND multi-modal transportation hub design.
* Nelch & Son: Chicago based Illinois Brick, one of the largest brick and masonry companies in the state, has taken over the former Nelch & Son site at 800 S. Ninth with plans to reopen this week It's been little more than a year after the nearly 120 year old business closed.
* Bloktoberfest: Downtown Springfield Inc.'s latest festival planned for October centers on craft brews, music, street artists and hitting the downtown shops; modeled after a festival in St. Louis.
