A court has ruled the Springfield District 186 School Board acted properly when it fired the former superintendent Walter Milton. An agreement with Milton was negotiated and agreed to in private.
The State Journal Register alleged the board violated the Open Meetings Act.
But the Appellate Court in Springfield says the school board complied with the law.
Appellate justices say the final action happened in open session and that the board satisfied the requirements. The decision goes against an opinion the Illinois Attorney General's office had issued.
In 2013, Milton was given a settlement of nearly 180-thousand dollars along with paying for certain benefits in exchange for him leaving before his contract was up.
