An audit finds the agency that keeps track of all of Illinois state property does a poor job.
Auditor General William Holland's review Thursday shows the Department of Central Management Services' inventory includes only a fraction of what the state controls. The review says the department has made little progress in developing a computerized list.
The CMS master property list is so sloppy it lists only one of nine universities and omits 33 state parks.
The audit did find that CMS reduced state lease costs by $55 million a year since 2009. But it faulted CMS for the way it leases space and for not disposing of surplus property.
The audit says CMS agrees with its recommendations but a spokesman did not have an immediate comment.
