MacMurray College To Close Permanently

A 174 year old educational institution in the area will soon close its doors permanently.

The board of MacMurray College in Jacksonville voted unanimously Friday to shut down at the end of the spring semester in May.

Board of Trustees Chair Charles O’Connell gave a statement after saying financial problems led to the decision.

"The Board spent more than a year exploring potential new sources for capital.  But we were unable to solve the serious financial difficulties facing us," he said.  "We deeply regret the decision and are sorry for the disruption and disappointment it will have in the Mac family.”

O’Connell admits the coronavirus pandemic and economic disruption has worsened the school’s financial outlook, but he said that’s not the main reason for the decision.

O’Connell said the college will help any students with their transfer needs.  MacMurray has enrollment of approximately 500 students.
