Our 16th President in the 21st Century: Lincoln and Artificial Intelligence

Our 16th President in the 21st Century: Lincoln and Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT have exploded over the past six months – both in popularity and in power. They can produce essays, paint portraits and write songs. But can they make sense of the complex, contradictory field of history? The historians at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum have been following the growth of AI with great interest and want to put ChatGPT to the test.

You’re invited to “Our 16th President in the 21st Century: Lincoln and Artificial Intelligence” on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. in our Union Theater.

Our historians will quiz ChatGPT to see how well it handles the rigors of historical research and interpretation related to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, two subjects where the basic facts are surrounded by almost limitless nuance. This engaging evening offers a lighthearted look at important questions being debated by proponents and critics of this emerging technology.

Will ChatGPT prove to be a useful tool for researchers? Or will this test reveal the concerns of critics, who point to the technology’s limitations and the potential to push out misinformation? Join us for the answers – and perhaps a few more questions – during this closer examination of artificial intelligence and its future impact.

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. This is a free program, but advance registration is required by clicking on the events page at PresidentLincoln.Illinois.gov
