Cole Escola’s much-acclaimed play about former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln will tour the states starting this fall.

Mary Lincoln experienced several personal tragedies. She lost young sons and her husband was assassinated. To cope, she turned to spiritualism. The use of mediums and seances to bring her comfort was later used as evidence of her "madness" and helped place her in a mental institution.

A new book details correspondence — letters long assumed to have been lost or destroyed -– that shed light on the nature of her illness as well as the nature of her relationships with the few friends and family she had left by that time.
