Brands Speak Out For Social Justice, But Critics Scrutinize Their Actions

Brands and businesses from Netflix to Peloton to the fruit snack Gushers have issued statements supporting social justice since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Amazon, in particular, drew attention for its statement supporting the protest movement, which critics said was its odds with the company’s record on labor rights. Amazon followed up with a pledge last week to donate $10 million to organizations including Black Lives Matter and the NAACP.

Here & Now’s Tonya Mosley speaks with Micha Frazer-Carroll, a journalist and opinions editor at gal-dem magazine, who writes that corporate “displays of so-called solidarity … look like cynical attempts to capitalize on black death.”
