A central Illinois sheriff is offering to help residents apply online for concealed-carry firearms permits.
The Sangamon County sheriff's office said Monday that, beginning Jan. 6, residents can use a computer in the department's records lobby. The department also will provide technical assistance.
The records lobby is located inside of the Sangamon County Complex.
Applicants also will be able to take their ID photo via webcam and scan the certificate proving they've completed required training. The sheriff says his office is working to set up a live-scan fingerprinting machine.
Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell says his agency is happy to help people who don't have Internet access.
Illinois State Police begin accepting online applications on Jan. 5 _ but paper applications won't be accepted until June.
