Sangamon County Historical Society Program - May 21

Local underground railroad conductors buried at Farmington Cemetery will be remembered. They came from different walks of life to help slaves gain their freedom. Their risk was enormous, and jail time was possible for all involved. State Senator Doris Turner and Tazewell County Clerk John C. Ackerman will speak about Illinois' research and attempts to create a permanent commission about this important work and the individuals who were involved. Following the ceremony, interested audience members will travel to the cemetery to place the specifically created markers on the conductors' graves.
