Room 9 - April 24

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois Springfield Visual Arts Program is proud to present “Room 9,” an exhibition featuring artworks by senior visual arts majors at UIS. The exhibit will open on Monday, April 21, and runs through Thursday, May 8. A reception will be held on Thursday, April 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
“Room 9” will be located in two locations on campus: the UIS Visual Arts Gallery, located in the Health & Sciences Building, Room 201, and the Access Gallery, located in the central lobby of the Visual & Performing Arts Building. A shuttle will be available to transport attendees between the two venues during the reception. The UIS Visual Arts Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and the Access Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Room 9” presents the work of nine unique artists working across a range of media. The exhibition title connects the two campus galleries where the artwork is displayed, emphasizing unity across spaces. Though the work spans two locations, “Room 9” exists as a singular, shared experience. In much the same way that art bridges the gap between artist and audience, the exhibition creates space for dialogue and connection among the artists themselves.
“This exhibition allows us seniors to build on our identities as artists,” said Mina Edmondson, one of the exhibiting artists. “To be able to speak to our audiences, both visually and verbally, is a formative skill that we value.”
“Room 9” features work in digital media, painting, drawing and installation. The artists explore a wide range of conceptual interests, including identity, perception, nature, fantasy, culture and moments of serendipity.
The nine participating artists are: Teddy Armstrong, Mina Elizabeth Edmondson, Cierra Ference, Karina Hernandez, Ethan Hughes, Nick Leonard, Alli Schattschneider, Amy Sherwin and Claire Waibel.
The UIS Visual Arts Gallery is supported by the Illinois Arts Council Agency. For more information about this and future exhibitions, visit UIS Visual Arts Gallery website.
