Springfield's Condell House Makes List Of Most Endangered Sites

Landmarks Illinois

One of Springfield’s oldest homes faces demolition unless a new owner is found.  The Condell House on South Fourth Street has been vacant for about 30 years.

Steve Myers Vice Chairman of the Springfield Historic Sites Commission says the goal is to find a new owner soon before a part of history is gone.

"Springfield has long held very highly Lincoln-era structures when they come under pressure from decay, neglect or threat of demolition its raises a special note in the history and in the hearts of the people in Springfield," he said.

Built in 1842, the site is part of the Governor's Mansion Historic Zoning District and the city has put it on a list of dilapidated buildings to be torn down.  The home also made the annual list of the Most Endangered Places in Illinois.
