Let Freedom Ring March

Bells rang out as students made their way from President Abraham Lincoln's home to the Old State Capitol.

April marks the month that both Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated.

I talked with one of the parent educators from Jefferson Middle School; Monica Walls Butler says it's important for young people to know their history.

"They need to see that the liberties they have they today didn't just automatically happen. This happened because people bled and died and marched and suffered for them to be able to have an education."

Mayor Mike Houston and Mayor-elect Jim Langfelder were both at the commemoration. Houston spoke about how younger students have more opportunities because of their ancestors' struggle for racial justice.
