Springfield Hospitals Competing For Trauma Patients

northwestern.edu

Both of Springfield's major hospitals will be offering trauma care starting New Years Day.

The State Journal Register reports that HSHS St. John's Hospital will compete with Memorial Medical Center in offering trauma care.  In the past the hospitals alternated annually providing care to those seriously injured.

Earlier this year  Southern Illinois University Medical School and Memorial said they intended to continue offering the care only at Memorial.  St. John's was upset by the move and now says it will also offer the service. The C-E-O of St. John's tells the newspaper that sometimes competition is good for the community.

In the past the hospitals had said they alternated the service to avoid duplication of services.
