DJs Raise Money To Save Community Radio In Springfield

WQNA Facebook Page

A group of DJs with WQNA radio is raising money to keep Springfield’s community radio station on the air.

The group has set up a GoFundMe page, called “Save Community Radio in Springfield!”, to purchase the license and equipment needed to continue broadcasting. The goal is $35,000, and as of Thursday, had $3,210

committed.

The Springfield Blues Club and local music shop Dumb Records are also backing the effort.

“We want to make it a part of the community again, where people tune in because people are excited to hear something they don’t hear on other programs,” said Ken Pacha, one of the DJs who hosts a hip-hop show. “Or they get to listen to events that maybe they didn’t get to go to or listen to artists that wouldn’t find another forum in this area.”

Pacha said the community radio offers unique programming for Springfield.

The Capital Area Career Center announced in August plans to sell  the license it holds for the student and community radio station, and related equipment. The price, listed by a media broker, was set at $90,000.

Jodi Ferrel, director of the CACC, said that may have been a bit high given the age of the equipment. Still, she said there are three interested buyers.

Ferrel said increasing maintenance costs and waning student interest in learning about radio led to the decision to sell the license.
