In a post on the social media platform X, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the operation would target undocumented immigrants who have sought refuge in Illinois and Chicago.

Hundreds of federal agents are being sent to a suburban naval base from Los Angeles, where an immigration blitz spurred protests that pushed President Trump to call in the National Guard. Trump has since threatened to send the Guard to Chicago while promising a crime crackdown and immigration arrests.

Federal agents would operate out of Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago through September, according to an email from a Navy captain who said there were “a lot of concerns and questions” about the plan.

The attorneys general said an expected $219 million in federal education funding used to pay for after-school and summer programs for 1.4 million students nationwide could be in jeopardy.

The suit, announced Tuesday, seeks to stop federal immigration officials from securing more health documentation or using the already obtained Medicaid records of millions nationwide to target enrollees for immigration enforcement.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said he would continue to enforce the ban on the devices through Illinois law that prohibits owning them and other devices — such as bump stocks — that can make semiautomatic rifles fire faster.

A Trump administration executive order issued in March demands states not count mail-in ballots received after Election Day and requires proof of citizenship to register to vote. The attorneys general argue that the power to regulate elections rests with Congress, the states.
