Karen Witter is a freelance writer and active community volunteer. She worked in Illinois state government for 35 years. Positions included Associate Director of the Illinois State Museum, director of the Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources,  natural resources policy advisor to Governor James Thompson, and director of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission.
