Lincoln Letters Live on Digitally

The Papers Of Abraham Lincoln

One hundred fifty years after Abraham Lincoln’s time as president important papers from his lifetime will be digitized. A new grant is making it possible.

A project known as “The Papers of Abraham Lincoln” has collected more than 100 thousand documents written to, or by, the president.

A six-figure grant from a records storage and information management services company, Iron Mountain, will help them be preserved forever.

That’ll include four new documents just discovered earlier this week.

"[There are] many documents from his presidency, the time he was president-elect, his political life here in Illinois prior to being president his congressional service; not exactly from the cradle to the grave but from his period from New Salem to his presidency," Director and Editor of The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Daniel Stowell said.

Stowell says preserving Lincoln's political and personal documents is important so people can continue to learn from and be inspired by Lincoln’s words.
