The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it has sent a team of specialists to a central Illinois nuclear plant to try to determine why a transformer failed and caused the plant to shut down.
Officials say the incident happened Sunday night at the Clinton Nuclear Plant about 20 miles southeast of Bloomington.
A five-member inspection team arrived at the plant on Thursday to evaluate the root cause of the problem and any corrective actions being taken by the company.
The plant is operated by Exelon Generation Co. A spokesman did not immediately return calls for comment on Friday.
The NRC says an inspection report documenting the findings will be available to the public within 45 days after the inspection ends.
Exelon operates 11 nuclear reactors in Illinois.
