Past Due: Q&A With Outgoing Auditor General

William Holland

Stateline, a news service from the Pew Charitable Trusts, has an interesting interview with outgoing Illinois Auditor General William Holland.

In it, he talks about the role and limitations of the office, and about raising one of the first red flags, in the form of a critical audit, on former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich was impeached and removed from office four years later.

“When we released that audit in 2005, the public was in a love affair with Blagojevich. I think we were the first people who cast some doubt about the quality of the administration,” Holland told Stateline. “His administration went to great pains to discredit the audit. They selectively leaked portions of it before it was released and claimed they had solved the problems.”

After more than two decade in the office, Holland is scheduled to retire in December.
