This is the WUIS Christmas Archives... for Monday... December 9th. I'm Rich Bradley
On this day in 1984... the Illinois Times reported the sun was shining... despite the very cold temperatures for Springfield's annual Christmas Parade. Also in Illinois Times... a history of Sears & Roebuck Company... widely known as an excellent source for holiday gift ideas. Included in the annual holiday book list were two of Vachel Lindsey's works…”Tree of Laughing Bells” and “The Poetry of Vachel Lindsey, Volume 3”
Holiday advertisements abound... with decorative themes of Santa Claus... Christmas trees... and ornaments. They include Murphy Cleaners... Jim Herron Limited... and Room Works... inviting readers to come and see their holiday presence.
At Fairhills Mall in 1984... Breakfast with Santa and the chance to have kids picture taken with the Big Man. Lisa Kay's Fashion Scene has a very merry collection of holiday clothing... accessories and gifts for that special woman on your list. Other fine gifts can be found at Li'l Folks Shop and Imagination Plus. All come with free gift wrap. Residents of Dirksen House are presenting a Christmas Bazaar at the home... and East of town... the Mechanicsburg Christian Church is hosting a tour of 5 homes... plus a visit to the church's nativity scene.
And... WICS-TV-20 is sponsoring the Springfield Ballet Company's "Nutcracker" performance in the Sangamon Auditorium. On page 29 of the Times is a photo of the cast... on state.
