Christmas Archives for December 11, 2013

This is the WUIS Christmas Archives... for Wednesday... December 11th.   I'm Rich Bradley

Lets look back at the Illinois State Register in 1966.  Governor Otto Kerner is almost forgotten at the Annual Christmas Party.  On the front page of the Register... two large photos of Santa's appearance at the party... with the governor standing in the background.

Helping Springfield's less fortunate calls for some cooperation during the holidays.  The Christmas Bureau organizes assistance provided by the various welfare agencies... relief offices... schools... churches... the Salvation Army... and... Friend-in-Deed... to insure help is spread among all known residents in need of assistance.

In Roger Whitman's Home Improvement column... he tells of a widow trying to keep her house up with help from her son.  Two weeks before Christmas her doctor orders her “south” to recover from pneumonia and upon her return in February finds her whole house adorned with red bows & holiday gift tags.   Each tag reads “Merry Christmas Ma!”   And that once-leaking kitchen faucet was the high spot... with its tag reading... “I don't drip anymore!”

Christmas concerts... meetings... and parties are set all around the Springfield area and there is a list of them on page 48 of the Register.  And images promoting the Springfield Art Association's “Children's Tinsel Time Party” are included in an insert along with the poem “'Twas the Night Before Christmas”... which will be performed as a puppet show during a party in the State Museum Auditorium.

That's the WUIS Christmas Archives for Wednesday... December 11th.  I'm Rich Bradley.
