Today's Vintage Cafe looks back to 2003, around the time Steve Winwood made a return to rock with the album About Time. He'd had a string of massive, synth-driven pop hits in the '80s ("Higher Love," et al), but clearly felt more comfortable revisiting his roots in bands like Traffic, Blind Faith and the Spencer Davis Group.
Jamming behind a Hammond B-3 console, Winwood recorded this hour-long session at WFPK in Louisville, Ky., with the three-piece band that recorded About Time. The set list is spectacular, spanning the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, a cover of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together," and material from About Time. It's only available online for a short time, so be sure to spend some time with it now.
This segment originally aired on June 20, 2003.
