What Happened to The Irishman?

Feb 10, 2020
Netflix

From the time it was announced, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman seemed destined to dominate the Academy Awards. An epic film from one of Hollywood’s most revered filmmakers, which sees him reuniting with long-time collaborator Robert DeNiro? And Joe Pesci coming out of retirement? AND Al Pacino? Top all of that off with a screenplay from Steve Zallian, based off a book inspired by true-life events and it would seem to hit Oscar Bingo.

Oscars Best Picture Rankings

Feb 9, 2020
Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences

To put it in the most purely academic term I can think of, it has been a stupid good year for film. This year’s Academy Awards features categories overflowing with strong choices, so much so that a whole separate show could be cobbled together featuring all the overlooked nominees. There are still some snubs that hurt, and the Academy’s diversity problem is still a much too slow work in progress, but it also feels as if the Academy’s Best Picture lineup is the strongest its been in a long time.

Democratic Candidates as Best Picture Nominees

Feb 3, 2020
Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences

It’s a harrowing time for Hollywood Democrats. As we speak, Academy voters are logging in and submitting their votes for the Academy Awards. At the same time, voters everywhere are preparing for their state’s primaries to select a candidate in the Democratic primary (The Republicans already have their candidate, so Jon Voight can rest easy). While on the surface, these seem like very disparate events (with only one having some actual stakes behind them), this year’s contests seem very similar.

OSCAR SPOTLIGHT - Judy

Jan 29, 2020
BBC Films

Our #OscarSpotlight series continues with a look at what many consider the best female performance of the year in the late-life biopic #Judy. Legendary performer Judy Garland arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts.

FEATURING: Jeremy Goeckner, Brandon Davis & Sara Baltusevich

Warner Bros. Pictures

Our #OscarSpotlight series continues with a look at the most nominated and quite possibly the most divisive film of the year; the 11-time nominee #Joker. In Gotham City, mentally-troubled comedian Arthur Fleck embarks on a downward-spiral of social revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his infamous alter-ego: "The Joker".

FRN REVIEW - Joker Sends Mixed Messages

Jan 22, 2020
Warner Bros. Pictures

As films like Parasite and Knives Out put on a clinic eviscerating the upper crust’s ambivalence toward those under its heel, Joker looks like an insecure delinquent screaming from the back of the class that he’s just as smart as the teacher’s pets. Joker is troll level incitement - low information, low insight, high self-confidence.

OSCAR SPOTLIGHT - The Two Popes

Jan 21, 2020
Netflix

Our #OscarSpotlight series continues with a look at #Netflix's #TwoPopes, the drama no one saw coming and the two nominated performances that power it.

Yes movie fans, the day has come once again. The nominations for 92nd Annual Academy Awards have been announced and, as always, there’s equal parts joy and anger to go around. I don’t think there’s quite anything in the movie world that inspires so much happiness and head-scratching at the exact same time as the yearly Oscar nominations. Per usual, there’s plenty of snubs and surprises to catalog.

SNUB: Frozen II Left in the Cold

The 2020 movie awards season has officially kicked off with the 77th Golden Globe Awards that took place last night in Hollywood, California. In many ways it’s been a truly whirlwind year in the world of movies. Record-breaking box office numbers have often given way to a thinking of diminishing returns when it comes to mid-budget studio fare. The emergence of streaming giant Netflix from cute upstart to legitimate leading studio in the Awards season has similarly led to a shifting window of what the movie industry is currently soon to be turning into.
