Illinois lawmakers are at odds over how to punish damage to important infrastructure. Some fear it would mean harsher sentences for charges that already exist.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order making Illinois the 18th state to join the Unites States Climate Alliance on Wednesday. The alliance was created when President Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris climate change agreement back in 2017.

A hearing is being held this week in Chicago on a federal program designed to jumpstart renewable energy projects.  States that get on board would be allowed more emission allowances in exchange for investment in cleaner alternatives.
