Medical and health officials answer questions about the first two confirmed COVID-19 cases in Springfield

Since March, dozens of employees at central Illinois hospitals and clinics have contracted COVID-19. But leaders of the region’s healthcare institutions said the rate of their workers getting sick is lower than the general population, and the precautions they put in place protect patients and employees.

Snapchat is a popular social media application that can send text messages, pictures, and videos among friends and family. But now, a similar app is finding its way into operating rooms and other hospital settings. Dr. Greg Mishkel discussed the EASE app and how the Prairie Heart Institute in Springfield is using it to help families during stressful times.

Once considered the new frontier of drugs and drug trafficking, synthetic cannabinoids have been around for years now and they’re becoming increasingly dangerous. More recently, authorities say dozens of overdoses in Connecticut occurred due to a drug called K-2 that was possibly laced with fentanyl.  

  

Illinois state Rep. Sara Wojcicki-Jimenez will join the HSHS Central Illinois Division Hospitals as director of marketing and communications in September. The Leland Grove Republican is slated to end her term representing the 99th District in January 2019.
