The state official who reviews the use of public money in Illinois is retiring after more than two decades on the job.
Illinois Auditor General William Holland told reporters Wednesday his retirement is effective at December's end. He says he wants to give the Legislative Audit Commission time to consider potential replacements.
Holland was named to his first 10-year term in 1992 and reappointed twice more. His tenure covered the administrations of five governors, from former Gov. Jim Edgar to current Gov. Bruce Rauner.
The 63-year-old says he's considered retiring for some time. He plans to spend more time with his children and grandchildren. He says he's not running for public office.
By law, his office audits agencies, reports its findings and makes recommendations to ensure laws are followed.
