Young Philanthropists Grant Deadline Nears

The Young Philanthropists in Sangamon County has hit the decade mark.

The group that pulls money together so it help fund worthy causes is celebrating with its largest grant ever.  $10,000 will be awarded in December.  But the deadline to apply is November 2.  The charities must serve youth in the county.

Micah Roderick chairs the grant steering committee.  He says several worthy causes have received money in the past.  Last year's grant award went to Girls On The Run of Central Illinois.

Along with encouraging applications, an effort is underway to get more people to join Young Philanthropists.

"It's a really fun group... people who want to give back to the community," said Stacy Reed, V.P. of Programs for the Community Foundation for the Land Of Lincoln.

"Giving away $10,000 for a grant in a year, very few of us individually could do that," she added.  Young Philanthropists has an annual members of $125.  The money is pooled and given back to the community.
