Transgender Student's Want Of Locker Room Use Strikes Major Debate

A fight over locker room access for a transgender student in a Chicago suburb has gained national attention. The agreement reached between one of the state’s largest school districts and the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights could have implications for the rest of the country too.

The student in Palatine, who has remained anonymous, is male to female transgender. She wants access to the girl’s locker room but debate arose over whether that was appropriate. While a settlement involving privacy curtains has been reached, not everyone’s happy. Duaa Eldeib is a Chicago Tribune reporter who has covered the issue – she joined us to talk more about it:
