State Fairs: A Summer Tradition

Bill Wheelhouse/Harvest Public Media

It’s August. The days are growing shorter, fall is approaching, but summer isn’t done just yet. All over the country folks are flocking to that ultimate summer tradition: the state fair.

Carnival rides and games, meat on a stick, livestock competitions – the Midwest does state fairs up right. And for many, summer in the Midwest isn't complete without a trip to the state fair. For others, a virtual visit will have to do.

We sent three of our reporters to sample the extravaganzas in their respective states, in what surely was their toughest assignment yet. Amy Mayer visited the Iowa State Fair, and may or may not have ordered sundry food items on a stick. Abbie Fentress Swanson captured some great photos of the Missouri State Fair. And Bill Wheelhouse checked out the Illinois State Fair in the Land of Lincoln.

Check out the audio slideshow below to get a taste of these classic fairs.
