Springfield Council Still Not Sold On Downtown Student Housing Project

bluffstone.com

Springfield aldermen turned down a plan to use tax increment financing to help develop a downtown student housing project.  The city council unanimously rejected the idea to give 700-thousand dollars.

The State Journal Register reports aldermen were concerned about a few issues...  including a lack of agreement on using local union labor for construction.

The Iowa based firm Bluffstone wants to build a 5 story apartment complex at Fourth and Madison streets.  It would cater primarily to University of Illinois Springfield students, especially those who are interning with state agencies.

The proposal could resurface however.  The council has agreed to a zoning change from the project.
