Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony's New Conductor Previews First Concert Of The Season

svys.org

Eugene Power says working with young musicians allows him to see their musical journeys.  He's taught high school band and has worked with youth in other settings.  Recently, he was named the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony music director and conductor.

"You can be involved with music in many, many ways throughout your entire life," Power said. "And that's what I like to see... students kind of catch fire with that and carry it with them."

Power's debut with the local group will be this Saturday, December 7 at 4 p.m. at the Springfield High School auditorium.  The various ensembles will play.  There is an admission charge for adults. Kids get in for free.

"I didn't start playing an instrument until I was in high school," Power recalls.  He started out playing saxophone, then clarinet.  From free lance musician to teacher and now to the halls of higher learning.  Power is working on his doctorate in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Illinois.

The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony has several openings currently and auditions will take place in early January.  You can find out more details through their website.

Also, the Community Orchestra plays a free concert Holiday Celebration! on Wednesday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoogland.
