Listen Up Men! Go See The Doctor

Men'shealthmonth.org

None of us look forward to visiting the doctor.  But getting a regular checkup and telling your physician about any problems you are experiencing can save your life.

June is Men's Health Month.  Dr. Shaheen Allanee, Head of Urologic Oncology at SIU in Springfield, says men are notorious for putting off medical care.

"Especially for bladder cancer, I see males who have been having blood in the urine for a year, a year and a half.  When they come in they are already beyond what I can help them with," he said. "That's because the disease has spread outside the bladder."

Early detection is key to surviving prostate cancer.  Regular checks after age 40 are suggested.

"If you look at the survival for multiple types of cancers, men who are married...their chances of surviving the disease is much better. And I think it's because the wives are the ones who say you need to go to your physician," Shaheen said.
