Solar Gets Its Day In The Sun This Saturday

Illinois Solar Tour

If you want to learn more about solar energy and how it can be put to use in your home or business, there's a good opportunity for a firsthand look this weekend. It's the annual Solar Tour.

Open houses will be held across the state.

Michelle Knox with WindSolar USA in Springfield said the cost of solar has come down in recent years.

"When I started (in 2008), solar was installing around $6 to $6.50 per watt," she said. "Now, we are installing for $3.25 to $3.31 per watt.  So almost a 50 percent reduction in pricing for customers."

Knox adds that makes solar more competitive for consumers.  She said the upfront investment is paid off faster.

During the solar tour, you can also learn about tax incentives for going solar.  Over 100 locations across Illinois, including many in the central part of the state, will be hosting visitors.
