The Scene was our Illinois arts & culture podcast through 2017. Rachel Otwell curated the podcast which provided full-length stories and follow-ups, links to other reports, and conversations with you.This podcast contained a range of stories from the world of arts & culture, from visual art to Springfield's DIY music scene, to profiles of interesting local characters. The podcast was about what makes artists tick, and the diverse culture that exists within our community.

Come along for the next episode of The Scene ... where Scott Faingold and I discuss Springfield's newest festival, Springfield's newest counter-festival to the new festival, one of our favorite cartoonists/artists - and much, much more!

Events discussed this week include:

  • The Downtown Bacon Throwdown is underway - Friday and Saturday. Feat. local food vendors, local music (+Pure Prairie League) and a kids area. Info here.
  • Black Sheep will host a Vegan Throwdown on Saturday. More info on that, and upcoming shows this weekend and Monday at the DIY music venue is here.
  • DEMO Gallery has an art opening and new exhibit from Korean-born artist Taehoon Kim, called Mass of Metaphor. Opening Friday night from 6 to 8:30 pm. Info here.
  • L.A. Guns plays at Homespun Republic Friday night (whut!?!) Info here.
  • On Monday at 4pm in room 212 at the Capitol there will be a public hearing re: closing the Illinois State Museum and other museum system facilities. Public comment is welcome. Info here.

This week's picks:

  • Lynda Barry's graphic novel "One! Hundred! Demons" was Rachel's first taste of the author (loved the book!)  Meanwhile, Barry has loooong been a fave of Scott's. Find out more about her hereand here.
