Growers who sell at farmers markets are feeling an impact of the meal kit delivery services, like Blue Apron, Sun Basket and others. If you can’t beat them, join them.
Similar style kits are being sold at the Old Capitol Farmers Market and demand has been strong.
“People have busy lives and busy schedules. It’s hard to eat seasonally and locally and do your research and know where your food is coming from,” said Molly Gleason, communications manager for the Illinois Stewardship Alliance.
Lindsay Keeney, manager of the Market, said there’s also help for the kitchen challenged with easy to follow recipes for cooking. “Over and over, we find people have never tasted kohlrabi and similar vegetables. So not only have they never tasted them, but they don’t know how to cook them,” she said.
Chef Ryan Lewis of Driftwood Cocktail and Eatery is putting together the meal kits and they’ll be available this Saturday.
It’s just another way to bring people to the farmer’s market and support local producers. Other additions have included music, chef demonstrations and weekly fitness activities.
