Lincoln Museum Split Goes To The Governor

Gov. Bruce Rauner will now decide whether to separate the capital city's Lincoln showplace from its parent agency.

The idea was originally part of a trade House Speaker Michael Madigan was developing with Rauner.

Those talks fell apart last week and Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said Sunday that the Chicago Democrat is ``uninterested in reforms to turn around Illinois.''

The Senate voted 34-18 to break the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

Directors of the two entities have feuded over direction. Lincoln museum officials say they could be more efficient going it alone.

Madigan and the Republican governor initially agreed to the plan if Rauner was allowed to give the state's business-development efforts to a new, nonprofit agency.
