Licensed For An Upgrade: Professional License Renewals Move Online

Amanda Vinicky

Illinois' information technology is getting an update --- one the State's CIO has said is necessary. He's said it's like state government's stuck in 1986 rather than 2016.

One IT overhaul took effect in late February. The state shifted from an old-school system of renewing professional licenses --- be it for roof contractors, nail technicians, or dentists -- to an online renewal system.

The governor recently highlighted this switch, at the state's central computing facility --- you'll be able to hear all of the computers and the fans cooling them buzzing in the background. Statehouse Bureau Chief Amanda Vinicky took the opportunity to catch up with Secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Bryan Schneider about how the switch to e-licensing is going.

While most professional licensing renewals have gone paperless, IDFPR is still rolling that out for the financial industry; I'm told banks can bank on it happening in the future.

Amanda Vinicky moved to Chicago Tonight on WTTW-TV PBS in 2017.
