Bedrock 66 Motel Mirrors 5/23

Motel Mirrors

The next Bedrock 66 Live! performance will be Friday, May 23 at Donnie's Homespun, 107 W. Cook in Springfield. Amy LaVere and John Paul Keith will perform songs from their recent EP Motel Mirrors along with songs from their solo records.  Joining Amy and JPK will be the southern Illinois rockabilly group the Swamp Tigers. Show time is 8 pm and $12 advance tickets are available at www.bedrock66.com.

The Motel Mirrors collaboration began over coffee. JPK asked for a meeting with fellow Memphis resident Amy LaVere to pitch her songs for her next solo record. He may have been angling to produce as well but, Luther Dickinson already had that gig. While no JPK production credit on a solo Amy LaVere record is forthcoming, something even more delightful emerged from that meeting.  According to JPK before the coffee was finished the two decided to team up and were booking shows. By the drive home they were texting each other band names. By that evening the Motel Mirrors were born.

Both Amy and JPK are veterans of the Americana/Roots music scene. While Amy knew in an instant that a duet record made perfect sense. JPK knew that he wanted a classic country feel for the record. You know, Conway and Loretta, George and Tammy. After a little time in the studio the pair has released a record of four originals and three covers. (Songs by Buck Owens, Mickey Baker of Mickey and Sylvia and Red Foley made the cut.) The music is classic and romantic, which of course in the classic country sense means a few cheating songs (Meet Me on the Corner penned by JPK fits that description well). No kitsch, no camp just rootsy, classic country duets. A timeless record with a sound that is unique to these two performers.
